Medium: Oils
Course Meets: July 9, 10, 11 2012
Time: 9:00am-4:00pm
Tuition: $350 + model fee

Course Description:
This comprehensive workshop will focus on capturing the essence of the sitter’s pose using our tools at hand, composition, structure of anatomy, color temperature, strong values and variance of edges.

I will demo each morning and will provide one-on-one instruction as students paint from life.

We will cover all the bases of Alla Prima painting with a variety of setups in the studio.
The first day will be painting from a nude model in the studio. We will explore the variations in composing a life study, approaching the painting with confidence and intention, while remaining open to the fluid inspiration of the moment. Color-mixing of flesh tones will be covered with a particular emphasis on the importance of subtle temperature shifts which add depth to the painting and help maintain a strong value structure.
The second day we will shift our attention to the portrait. Taking all that has been covered the first day and adding to it the ability to get the particular likeness of your subject and the emotion conveyed in the subtle expressions of the sitter’s face.
The third day will be a clothed figure, either in the studio or outdoors, depending on the weather

You need a whole new set of skills to bring your work to market today than just a few short years ago. Of course, the challenges of keeping up with interactive websites, social media, and email marketing are coupled with unparalleled opportunity for the working artist. This three session workshop will introduce you to the skills you need to find your audience and turn your fans into patrons, both on line and in the real world.
Take this workshop series to find out about

Using social media

Building an interactive, dynamic website

Cultivating relationships with patrons and galleries

Building your mailing list

Creating compelling mailers

Hosting shows and studio visits

getting the press to support your message

Session One – Marketing in the real world
As important an “new media” is to getting your message out, and building your patron relationships, it doesn’t take the place of marketing through the mail, by phone, through the press, and with private events.
This first session will give you dozens of inspiring ideas on how to create beautiful print materials and one-of-a-kind events that will keep your patrons and supporters excited.
Session Two – Taking Control of your web presence
You need to have a website, but these days a static “gallery” site with contact information just doesn’t cut it. Using free content management software from WordPress, you can take control of your web presence and create a customized, up-to-date, interactive website. Using free plug-ins and low-cost software you can integrate your website with social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Constant Contact and Instagram.
Session Three – Using Social Media
The web is no longer a static environment. Every morning and afternoon people log in to social media sites to see “what’s new” with their friends and associates. You can use this new media environment to bring people directly to your artwork, your website, your gallery, or your special event. During this workshop you’ll look at the tools you need to make the most of the Social Network and turn fans into patrons.
