Class times: 9:00-5:00
Tuition: $475+model fee

Description:
The focus of this workshop is about learning to draw Heads, Faces and Features based on classical techniques and methods developed in the Italian Renaissance and practiced for over five centuries by the world’s great masters. Michael will decode Da Vinci, reveal Rembrandt and take the mystery out of Michelangelo. He will demonstrate the essential techniques and concepts of proportion, line, plane, form, value, structure, perspective and composition. During the morning sessions Michael will demonstrate the construction and planes of the head exploring the major and minor features that give the head its individual character. He will also analyze the underlying muscles that are key to expression. The afternoon sessions will focus on drawing from the model with individual critiques as requested.

About the Instructor:
Michael Mentler (Born in Jacksonville, Illinois) is a contemporary American painter/sculptor and Master draughtsman best known for his voluminous sketchbook journals dedicated to figure structure and his life-size figurative works in oil, pastel and mixed media. The paintings combine figurative subjects with abstracted backgrounds inspired by Hans Hofmann and Richard Diebenkorn. Of this dual representation strategy Mentler notes, “my effort to constantly push the real in the abstract and pull the abstract out of the real.”

Michael received his formal education at The American Academy of Art in Chicago, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, and Washington University in Saint Louis, B.F.A., M.F.A., M.A., (Art History). Michael taught at Washington University for several years early in his career and has taught hundreds of students at the The Society of Figurative Arts in Dallas of which he is the Founder and Director.

Michael has been featured in numerous publications including feature articles in American Artist Drawing and American Artist Workshop magazines, Graphis, Art Direction, and CA. Several of his works are featured in “Lessons in Classical Drawing – Essential Techniques from inside the Atelier” which was recently released by Watson-Guptill. He is currently producing several instruction DVD’s on Figure Drawing and Artistic Anatomy the first of which “Heads, Faces and Features” has already sold hundreds of copies worldwide. Currently, Mentler teaches workshops throughout the country. He enjoys an international following and his works are represented in many private and public collections including The Kemper Art Museum, The Mead Library and The Pulitzer Collection

Medium: Oils
Course Meets: August 29, 30, 31
Class times: 9:30-4:30
Tuition:$375.00
Level: All Levels

Description:
Calvin Liang will be teaching with a focus on painting on location from direct observation. Plein air painting is a foundational part of training the eye to better understand the concepts of composition, design, and color harmony. The lessons will include 1) How to plan a composition that will be most effective for the artist’s intentions and preferences; 2) How to better see and use warm and cool color in landscape; 3) How to command hardness and softness of the edges to create space ina painting; 4) How to simplify the subject matter through the use of basic design, value, color and drawing skills; 5) How to consider the reasons for different paint surface textures, and brushstroke direction over the forms; and 6) How to get the best possible results in a short time.

Bio:
Calvin was born in Canton China, and first began painting in high school. He completed his art education at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, recognized as one of China’s most prestigious and competitive art academies. In China, his skills as a fine artist were applied to the theatrical industry, where he designed and created sets for operas and musicals for the Canton Opera Institute.

Liang moved to the United States in 1987 and continued his profession as a full-time artist. He had a long and successful career creating visual art for the entertainment industry in animation, which included Walt Disney Studio and Nickelodeon Studio. He put in a semester in college learning the ins and outs of animation, and eventually helped bring “The Little Mermaid” and “Cinderella Stories” to life. He was lately employed with Nickelodeon, working on “Angry Beavers” and “SpongeBob.” Ultimately, however, Liang became fascinated by the beautiful California landscape and transformed himself into a fine artist, painting themes of his choosing. Now his well-known sailboats crashing through waves, to rocky California coastline, to Spanish missions of centuries past, Calvin Liang’s masterful oils never fail to impress and inspire. Rediscover beautiful land and seascapes through Calvin’s eyes. He is a master signature member of Oil Painters of America, a signature member of Oil Painters of America, a signature member of California Art Club and Laguna Plein Air Painter’s Association. He is the recipient of numerous art awards.

Description:
Graphite is a sensitive and flexible medium, and my preferred way to create highly finished portrait drawings. I will demonstrate each step of my process, pausing to allow you to follow along on your own drawing and offering individual instruction in-between demos. We will work from a live portrait model who will remain in the same pose for the entirety of the workshop. My method for drawing focuses on patient, careful observation, abstraction of shapes (dark and light shapes) and the methodical recording of these observations, to attain a thoughtful likeness. I will also discuss my dedication to design at its base level (in each mark I make with my pencil) as well as how it affects composition and ultimately the feel of your completed work. My process will be laid before you step by step, supplemented by hand-outs.This workshop will breakdown the process of creating a beautiful portrait drawing, eliminating the mystery, and giving you tangible building blocks for further study.
